Is there any easy way for me to mark all of the current messages read so that I can truly see only new posts?

Yes there is, on the bottom center of the forum index, there is a link for Mark Forums Read (http://www.hcatech.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?do=markread), the link is also under the quick links menu link on the top right of the forum.
