Whole house audio delivery recomendations

I am definitely getting the urge to add audible alerts to my home automation solution and I'm looking for method in which to do so. I have started with 2 wireless speakers, but they are a poor solution as they go into stand-bye mode way too quickly and require almost 10-15 seconds of audio transmission before they awake from stand-bye. So I'm curious as to the solutions others have used to get audible alerts throughout the house. Do you just have a bunch of speakers hooked up to an amp and it controls all or is there volume control or what?

What type of "audible alerts" do you want? A voice? A chime? ???

Also, what action(s) are you trying to bring attention to?
