View Full Version : How do I look for Insteon network linking problems and fix them?

Insteon Networks of any size can easily become corrupted. In the Insteon linking model, each transmitter button (or switch paddle) has a list of devices that are linked from it - what devices are controlled by it. Each of those devices contain a link back to the controlling device.

It's easy, for example, to re-link a button and forget to first un-link what is already linked. Or to factory reset a device to clear its linking table and then it is too late to unlink it from all the controllers that control it.

If you make these mistakes your Insteon network has problems. Some problems are harmless and some are not. For example, if you have a KeypadLinc button linked to 3 modules and you factory reset one of the modules, then each time you press the KeypadLinc button one of the three it's controlling doesn't ACK, so the button blinks telling you something didn't respond.

HCA can locate linking problems and correct them. Select from the menu Insteon - Insteon Network Clean
49

This dialog shows the linking problems found. In this example network two problems where found. To correct them - by removing the problem links - check off the ones to fix and press the "Correct checked" button.

Of course network problems can only be found if HCA has all the linking tables. It's a good idea to do a Network Database Capture before doing a Network Correct.
