When an Insteon device fails you not only have to replace it with a working device but also have to link it back into your network. This can be complex if many devices are linked from the failed device and many devices are linked to the failed device.

HCA can help with this using a re-programming tool.

First, replace the failed device with the new device - plug ion the new LampLinc or wire in the new SwitchLinc or KeypadLinc - and take note of the replacement device address. Don't add this to your network using New - Device!

Next select from the menu Insteon - Insteon Device Replace.

In this dialog select the device you are replacing and enter the replacement device address. Press the "Perform Replacement" button.

Replace does two things:

HCA writes to the new device with the linking table of the old device.
In any devices that were linked to the old device, HCA updates their linking tables. Any links that contains the failed device address are replaced with links to the replacement device address.

You can also use this operation if, for whatever reason, you needed to factory reset a device and you want to get it re-linked into your network. Use the Device replace dialog and enter as the replacement address the same address as the "old" device. HCA writes the whole linking table to it.

One very important Note:
Make sure that you keep HCA up to date with the linking tables of all your devices by doing a Network Database Capture after you perform any manual linking. If you don't keep HCA up to date with all the device's linking table you can't perform the device replace and have it work as you expect.
